International Recognition for TRIETHNÉS FESTIVAL Artistic Director Yorgos Ziavras

Conductor and TRIETHNÉS FESTIVAL Artistic Director Yorgos Ziavras has received significant recognition from the German music press for his artistic work during the 2025/26 season in Germany.
In the Opernwelt Jahrbuch 2026, as part of the magazine’s established annual critics’ survey, music critic Richard Lorber singles out Ziavras among the notable artists and musical events of the past season, highlighting the breadth of his work and his ability to move with equal confidence across different musical periods and aesthetics.
As Lorber writes:
“The young Wuppertal conductor Yorgos Ziavras is equally at home in avant-garde and early music, and was also the conductor of the revival of Phyllis Tate’s opera The Lodger.”
The recognition follows an exceptionally active season for the Greek conductor at Oper Wuppertal, where his work encompassed a remarkably broad musical spectrum. Among the productions that stood out was his interpretation of Antonio Vivaldi’s opera Griselda, which received outstanding critical acclaim for its musical approach, as well as the revival of British composer Phyllis Tate’s rarely performed opera The Lodger.
The latter marked a significant contemporary rediscovery of Tate’s work and was recorded with the Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal and WDR 3. The recording is scheduled for release on CD and across digital streaming platforms in 2027.
Ziavras’s inclusion in Opernwelt’s annual critics’ survey represents significant recognition of his growing presence on the German and wider European music scene and carries particular significance for TRIETHNÉS FESTIVAL, where he serves as Artistic Director. The artistic philosophy he has developed through his international work — bringing different musical eras into dialogue, exploring lesser-known repertoire, and approaching music as a space for encounter and exchange — also lies at the heart of the Festival’s artistic identity.
For the 2026/27 season, Yorgos Ziavras serves as Music Director of Oper Wuppertal, following his promotion by the theatre’s artistic leadership after his highly successful previous season with the company.
