Prespa One Step Closer to UNESCO World Heritage Status

TRIETHNÉS FESTIVAL welcomes the cross-border cooperation initiative between Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia aimed at protecting and promoting the natural and cultural heritage of the Prespa region.

During the trilateral Prespa Meeting, held last Friday (9 October) at the Prespa Town Hall in Laimos, at the initiative of the Greek Ministry of Culture, an agreement was signed to explore cross-border cooperation for the protection of the Prespa region’s unique natural and cultural environment.

The agreement was signed by Lina Mendoni, Minister of Culture of Greece; Blendi Gonxhja, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports of Albania; and Sedat Sulejmani, Minister of Culture and Tourism of North Macedonia, in the presence of representatives from UNESCO, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European External Action Service (EEAS), and the European Commission.

The meeting marks an important first step towards developing a joint strategy among the three countries, with the ultimate goal of securing the transboundary inscription of the Prespa region on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a Mixed Cultural and Natural Heritage Site, recognising both its outstanding natural value and its unique cultural heritage.

This initiative opens up new opportunities for raising the region’s international profile, developing sustainable cultural tourism, strengthening cross-border cooperation, and creating new opportunities for local communities across all three countries.

TRIETHNÉS FESTIVAL welcomes this joint initiative, which closely aligns with the festival’s founding principles and its vision of establishing Prespa as a shared space for artistic creation, international cooperation, and cultural dialogue.

In this spirit, TRIETHNÉS FESTIVAL is already advancing its strategic plans to further strengthen and expand its cross-border activities, fulfilling a commitment made at its founding: by 2030, the festival aims to take place simultaneously across all three countries of the Prespa region — Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia.

With contemporary music creation, collaboration between artists and cultural institutions, and the connection between culture and the region’s unique identity at its core, TRIETHNÉS FESTIVAL aspires to play an active role in shaping a shared cultural future for Prespa, transcending national borders.
