“PNOI” – Kornilios Selamsis

30 Aug 2025 20:00

Agios Germanos, 53077 – Prespes

DESCRIPTION

Cornelios Selamsis, in PNOÍ (Breath, 2016), draws inspiration from the English Renaissance, reimagining five refined madrigals for female voice, woodwinds, brass, and double bass. The sixth movement is based on the timeless lament aria “When I Am Laid in Earth” by Henry Purcell, interwoven with modernist poetic fragments by Ezra Pound.

At the conclusion of PNOÍ, the space is suddenly transformed into a Prespa village celebration, with the participation of the traditional brass ensemble TOPIKI PARADOSI.

Composer’s note
PNOÍ is an attempt at coexistence, the creation of an alloy, bringing together works from the past with a work written in our own time. Five Elizabethan madrigals and one slightly later aria are enclosed within a six-movement composition that seeks not to erode their form, but to follow it, to understand it, to forget it, and perhaps, in the end, to reshape it.
